Werner Berthold (Librarian)

Werner Berthold (born February 10, 1921 in Auerbach / Vogtl. , † March 29, 2017 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German librarian and Germanist .

Life

Born in the Saxon Vogtland , Berthold studied history, literature and philosophy at the University of Leipzig and then specialized in librarianship. In 1953 he received his doctorate with the dissertation The Phenomenon of Alienation at ETA Hoffmann . He got his first job at the Saxon State Library in Dresden , after a brief move to the German State Library in Berlin Unter den Linden , he worked at the German Library in Frankfurt am Main from November 1957 , where he focused in particular on the management of the German Exile Archive the years 1933–1945 specialized and expanded the emigrant library. In 1965 he played a key role in organizing the exhibition "Exile Literature 1933–1945". He retired in March 1984, but remained closely associated with the German National Library in the years that followed until his death.
