Athletic career

In the 1951/52 season, the BSG Empor went from Lauter, a town in the Western Ore Mountains with a population of 8,000, to its second season in the second-rate GDR league . At the end of the season, the BSG was the winner of season 2. So she had already achieved promotion to the GDR league, but the schedule stipulated that both season winners should also play the GDR league champions. Two wins were required, after all four games were necessary before Empor Lauter was confirmed as league champions after 1: 0, 1: 5, 0: 0 nV and 3: 0. One of the guarantors of this title was the 27-year-old left winger Werner Gebhardt. He played all four finals, decided the first encounter with his 1-0 winning goal and ended the decisive fourth game with a 3-0 win.

In the first league season of the Lauterer in 1952/53, coach Walter Fritzsch initially did not rely on the successful left winger and preferred the newcomers Herbert Zwahr and Karl-Heinz Mohr in this position . Only when outside runner Hans Meyer failed after 13 championship games , Gebhardt was used as the left runner in 15 league games until the end of the season. As 10th out of 17 teams, Empor Lauter managed to stay in the league. When Heinz Pönert, a new coach, took over the team in the 1953/54 season , Gebhardt was part of the game from the first point game. He essentially retained the position as a left runner and played all 28 championship games.

After a total of 43 league appearances for Empor Lauter with four goals, Gebhardt moved to local and league rivals BSG Wismut Aue for the 1954/55 season, where the previous midfielders Paul Suss and Heinz Weißflog were eliminated. However, Gebhardt did not manage to regain a regular place and he was only used eight times between the 1st and 20th championship game. During this time the BSG was converted into the SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt, whose football section continued to be based in Aue. After his last league game for SC Wismut Gebhardt's senior league career ended, in which he played 51 games and scored four goals.
