Werner Groiß (born December 6, 1967 in Gars am Kamp ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ), auditor , tax advisor and entrepreneur . From 2013 to 2017 he was a member of the Austrian National Council and in 2016/17 he was the finance spokesman for his party in parliament and chairman of the parliamentary finance committee. Groiß is also the spokesman for the Economic Association and the Waldviertel Chamber of Commerce.

Werner Groiß was born as the son of an entrepreneurial couple who ran a carpentry and funeral business. His older brother, Father Albert Groiß, is the parish priest of Horn , and the three-time gold medalist Andrea Scherney is his cousin; one of his grandfathers was the artist Robert Fuchs , who became known as a state treaty painter . Groiß attended primary school in Gars am Kamp between 1974 and 1978 and then from 1978 to 1982 the secondary school in Gars am Kamp. In 1982 he switched to the HTL for interior construction and furniture construction in Mödling, where he passed his Matura in 1987 . He then did his civil service and subsequently studied at the Vienna University of Economics and Business . He was appointed tax advisor in 1996 and signed up as a management consultant in 1998. In 2001 he was publicly appointed auditor.

Politics and functions

At the regional level

Werner Groiß was a founding member and chairman of the young ÖVP Gars am Kamp between 1986 and 1988, and in 2000 he became the vice chairman of the ÖVP Gars am Kamp. He was active as a long-standing (managing) councilor in Gars am Kamp until 2019.

Groiß is chairman of the Gars Economic Association and in 2005 took over the role of district chairman of the Horn Economic Association. In 2010 he took over the function of district group chairman in the Lower Austria Economic Association, and since 2012 he has also been the spokesman for the Waldviertel Economic Association. Groiß has been the economic spokesman for the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce at the Waldviertel branch since 2012 and has been the district chairman of the Horn district of the Lower Austria Chamber of Commerce since 2005.

Werner Groiß has been the treasurer of the association for the support of the recultivation of former business locations in Gars since 2012 and the deputy treasurer of the "Waldviertel Qualification Offensive - Association for the Promotion of Training and Further Education of Workers". Furthermore, since 2010 he has been the treasurer of the “Waldviertel Economic Forum - Association for the Promotion of Economic Development in the Waldviertel” and treasurer of the Kamptal-Manhartsberg tourism association. He is also active on the board of the Gars Innovativ business development association and the Kamptal Kulturpark tourism association.

At the federal level

In 2013, Groiß succeeded the outgoing Günter Stummvoll as National Councilor for the Waldviertel constituency . In 2016, he was appointed to succeed Andreas Zakostelsky as finance spokesman for the ÖVP and chairman of the parliamentary finance committee. Groiss ended his parliamentary career in December 2017.
