Career

Jakobs, who outgrown VfR Büttgen's youth , joined the Fortuna Düsseldorf amateur team in 1980. Head coach Willibert Kremer first used the talent from the Niederrhein Association on April 13, 1984 in a 6-0 away defeat at VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. The 1.85 m tall Jakobs came on in the 58th minute of the game for Michael Bunte . For the 1985/86 season he, like his two teammates Sven Demandt and Jörg Schmadtke , was taken over from the amateur team to the professional squad . From the professional field, Fortuna signed Calle Del'Haye and Andreas Keim for the Bundesliga team of Fortuna Düsseldorf, now trained by Dieter Brei . Jakobs was used in ten league games and Fortuna took 14th place in 1985/86. In his second Bundesliga season, 1986/87, he completed nine league games in a row from the fourth up to and including the 12th game day, after which he was no longer used in the Bundesliga. Werner Jakobs' Bundesliga career ended with the game on November 1, 1986, a 3: 4 away defeat at 1. FC Nürnberg. He ran alongside other players like Rudi Kargus , Rudolf Wojtowicz , Manfred Bockenfeld , Josef Weikl , Andreas Kaiser , Ralf Dusend , Dean Thomas , Dirk Krümpelmann , Henrik Ravn Jensen and Sven Demandt. At the end of the round, Düsseldorf rose to 17th place in the 2nd division.

In two years he was always listed as a supplementary player in the squad. He could not establish himself as a regular player. Therefore he moved to SG Union Solingen in 1987 , with whom he played in the 2nd Bundesliga for the next two years . In the year of the championship and the Bundesliga return of Fortuna Düsseldorf, 1988/89 , Jakobs completed 23 league games for Solingen in which he scored two goals, but could not prevent relegation to the amateur camp. He played in both league games against his previous club: In the first half of the season he scored the 1-0 winning goal against Fortuna and in the second half of the season he was in front of 14,000 spectators in the 1-1 draw in Düsseldorf in the midfield of Solingen been in use.
