Dean Thomas (born December 19, 1961 in Bedworth ) is a former Welsh football player . The midfielder and striker played part of his career in Germany.

Career

Thomas began his professional career at Wimbledon FC . In 1984 he moved from the Finnish club Ilves Tampere to Germany and joined Alemannia Aachen in the 2nd Bundesliga . There he was initially used as a substitute, but was soon able to establish himself as a regular in the team led by Werner Fuchs around Bernhard Olck , Andreas Brandts and Gernot Ruof . Until September 1985 he ran at the Tivoli in Aachen and attracted high class attention. Fortuna Düsseldorf then steered him into the Bundesliga , where he made his first division debut in the 4-1 home defeat against Werder Bremen on September 13th. Until the end of the season he was mainly used as a substitute, but was mostly able to play in the starting lineup in the following season. With the club from the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, however, he rose from the first division. Under the newly signed coach Aleksandar Ristić , he came in the second division season 1987/88 to 33 games. After missing the return to the Bundesliga as fifth in the table, he left the club at the end of the season.

Thomas moved back to the island and joined the English club Northampton Town , who competed in the Third Division . After a season he moved to league rivals Notts County , with whom he rose to the Second Division in 1990 and a year later to the First Division . After a year in the first class, he missed relegation with the team and thus the qualification for the Premier League .

In 1994 Thomas left the club for Bedworth United , where he worked as a player-coach. From 1997 he worked in the same position for Hinckley United . In 2005 he ended his active career and has worked exclusively as a trainer ever since.
