Werner Kirsch (born April 16, 1938 in Werdau ; † July 29, 2017 ) was a German boxer and boxing trainer.

Life

Born in Werdau in Saxony , Kirsch practiced gymnastics , soccer , handball and athletics before he got into boxing. As a boxer, he took part in the 1960 Summer Olympics as a member of the all-German team . In 1960 he won second place in the featherweight division for SC activist Brieske-Senftenberg at the boxing championship of the German Democratic Republic , in 1962 he was third in the lightweight division. As a member of the boxing relay of SC Cottbus , Kirsch was also GDR champion in the lightweight 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1966. In 1964 he took part in the inner-German Olympic eliminations between athletes from the GDR and the FRG, but lost there in the final against Wolfgang Schmitt.

After his boxing career, Kirsch worked as a junior coach in Cottbus and then as a management coach at TSC Berlin . When he spoke out against using one of his boxers as a sparring partner in 1975, this led to an argument with boxing officials. Kirsch had to give up his post as boxing trainer and was not active in the sport for the next 25 years, but worked as a pub owner. In 2000 Kirsch became a trainer of the then newly founded professional boxing stable SES through the mediation of Ulli Wegner . Kirsch worked as a trainer for SES for seven years, where he looked after boxers such as René Monse , Dirk Dzemski , Robert Stieglitz and Lukas Konecny . After his time at SES, Kirsch became a trainer at the Arena Boxing Stable through Fritz Sduneks in 2007 .

From 2015, Kirsch lived in a retirement home in Berlin .
