Werner Müller-Warmuth (born October 1, 1929 in Hamburg ) is a German chemist ( physical chemistry ). He was a professor of physical chemistry and director of the institute at the University of Münster .

Life

Müller-Warmuth studied physics and chemistry and received his doctorate in 1955 from the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . He completed his habilitation in 1961 at the University of Mainz , where he became associate professor in 1967. He also worked at the Otto Hahn Institute from 1955 to 1965 . From 1965 to 1973 he was head of department at the Euratom Research Center in Ispra and from 1973 professor and director of the Institute for Physical Chemistry in Münster. From 1978 to 1982 he was rector of the university. In 1995 he retired .

From 1981 to 1983 he was President of the North Rhine-Westphalian State Rectors' Conference. He is honorary professor at the University of Lima in Peru (1980). He supervised 88 doctoral students and published around 220 scientific papers.

He researched the structure of liquids, glasses, intercalation structures and other complex systems using various spectroscopic methods ( NMR , EPR , neutron scattering, Mössbauer spectroscopy , double resonance methods ). He also investigated intermolecular movements and quantum degrees of freedom of movement in crystals, glasses and other disordered solids. He also dealt with non-invasive NMR methods and in vitro spectroscopy in medicine.

He was a member and chairman of the apparatus committee of the German Research Foundation (DFG), from 1983 to 1993 a member of the scientific-technical committee of the supervisory board of Forschungszentrum Jülich and of the advisory board of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz. After the fall of the Berlin Wall he was involved in the reform of the University of Leipzig and, from 1976, in the development of research at the University of Bogota in Colombia. In 1997/98 he was an EU advisor for equipping universities in Palestine and advocated student and doctoral exchanges between Münster and the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. From 1962 to 1965 he was an advisor to the Turkish government and visiting professor at Ankara University . He was also a visiting scholar in Grenoble (1959), at Rutgers University (1983) and in al-Mansura in Egypt (1989).

Müller-Warmuth was co-editor of the journal for nature research .
