Werner Nerlich

Werner Nerlich (born July 3, 1915 in Nowawes ; † September 15, 1999 ) was a German graphic artist and painter . He was an honorary citizen of the city of Potsdam .

Life

Werner Nerlich studied art in Berlin, among others with Hans Orlowski and Max Kaus . After completing his studies, he was called up for military service. In the pocket of Stalingrad he switched to the side of the Red Army in 1943 and from July 1944 was on the front for the National Committee Free Germany . After the end of the Second World War, Nerlich was commissioned by the Prime Minister of Brandenburg Karl Steinhoff to build up the motor transport system in the state. From January 1946 Werner Nerlich designed posters and printed matter. With Otto Nagel he initiated exhibitions, among others, in the Villa Kellermann and in the Potsdam Marstall with Max Pechsteinand Karl Hofer .

In 1947 he founded the State School of Painting in Potsdam , of which he was artistic director until 1951. In 1949 he was elected 2nd chairman of the Association of Visual Artists . From 1951 to 1955 Nerlich was director of the technical school for applied arts (in Potsdam ). From 1955 to 1973 Nerlich was director of the technical school for advertising and design in Berlin and the branch in Potsdam.

In 1985 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold.

Works

In addition to his professional activities, Werner Nerlich also worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist. Building-related art occupies an important place in his work. For example, in Potsdam:

  • the metal relief on the swimming pool at the Brauhausberg,
  • the mural in the old town hall and
  • the bell stele in the old cemetery .

His older work includes drawings, watercolors and pastel paintings.

Exhibitions

Werner Nerlich's works have been exhibited in Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, Potsdam, Münster, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Opole, Moscow, Damascus, Aleppo, Zagreb, Ljubljana and Uherske Hradiste, among others.
