Werner Onken

Werner Onken (* 1953 ) is a German economist , author and publisher . He presented u. a. the 18-volume complete edition of the writings of the businessman and social reformer Silvio Gesell (1862-1930) together and published them.

Live and act

After his community service he studied at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg and graduated with a degree in economics . Since 1982 he has worked as a research assistant at the Foundation for the Reform of Monetary and Land Order . There he is responsible for editing the Zeitschrift für Sozialökonomie , the archive for money and land reform and the organization of the Mündener Talks conference series . In 2008, together with Niko Paech , he founded the lecture series on post-growth economics at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, which took place until 2018.

Onken wrote a monetary interpretation of Michael Ende's novel Momo in 1986 , which was published in the magazine Issues of Freedom . In a letter to Onken, Michael Ende confirmed that Momo was critical of today's monetary system : “By the way, you are the first to notice that the idea of ​​' aging money ' is in the background of my book 'Momo'. It is precisely with these thoughts of Steiner and Gesell that I have occupied myself more intensively in recent years, since I have come to the view that our cultural question cannot be solved without the money question being solved at the same time or even beforehand.

Archives for money and land reform

The archive, which Werner Onken has built up since 1983, is intended to enable scientific research on proposals for reforming the monetary system and land law, including the problem of resources. The archive contains primary and secondary literature on the reform of the monetary and land system with more than 5,000 German-language and 500 foreign-language books, brochures and essays as well as more than 120 periodicals, series and newspapers. These include works by Pierre-Joseph Proudhon , Gustav Landauer , Henry George , Adolf Damaschke , Franz Oppenheimer , Silvio Gesell, Rudolf Steiner and others who sought to solve social questions in a liberal way. The archive for monetary and land reform is on loan from the Foundation for the Reform of Monetary and Land Regulations in the library of the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg.
