Werner Emil Hermann Scheer (born June 6, 1893 in Vechta ; † August 27, 1976 in Büdingen ) was a German naval officer , most recently rear admiral in World War II .

Life

Scheer joined the Imperial Navy with Crew 12 and was trained as a naval officer. At the beginning of the First World War , he began his service on the liner Zähringen . In November 1915 he was transferred to a mobile radio station in Courland . After a submarine training course in December / January 1916/17, he became an officer on watch on the submarine SM U 30 . In November 1917 he switched to the same function on UB-85 , which was sunk in April 1918 by a British ship in the Irish Sea. The occupation survived and Scheer was taken prisoner by the British until the end of the war.

After returning to Germany in November 1918, Scheer was made available at the Kiel Naval Command. In January 1920 he joined the Loewenfeld naval brigade . After its dissolution in May 1920, he served in the ship master division of the Baltic Sea and with the staff of the commander of the land forces of the Baltic Sea. From January 1921 to September 1923 he was a watch officer and division officer on the liner Hannover . Scheer then became a consultant for the ship master's division in the Baltic Sea in order to become an officer on watch on the ship of the line Hessen in October 1924 . In September 1925 he became the commander of the M 113 minesweeper .

From September 1927 to September 1929 Scheer was 4th admiralty staff officer in the fleet command, then until September 1932 chief of the 1st minesweeping semi-flotilla. In October 1935 Scheer changed to the submarine commander and from December 1935 to May 1936 was also the commander of the U 10 as corvette captain . After his recovery he became head of the submarine school in April 1938.

In October 1939 Scheer moved to the Navy High Command as head of the budget department . In February 1941 he became a staff officer with the staff in the Kriegsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven and in September 1941, promoted to rear admiral, their chief of staff . In December 1942 Scheer became the commandant of the Toulon naval arsenal and at the same time chief of the German naval command in Toulon. In September 1943 he returned to the high command of the Navy, where he was briefly chief of the special staff for accommodation and then chief of the OKM / K III. In November he became commander of the Essen I military district command and was taken prisoner there in April 1945.

After his release in March 1947, he worked for a short time at the Office for Property Control in Büdingen and Giessen . After his death he was buried in Büdingen.
