Werner Schmidli

Werner Schmidli (born September 30, 1939 in Basel ; † November 14, 2005 there ) was a Swiss writer .

Life

Werner Schmidli came from a working class family. He attended secondary school and completed an apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory assistant in Basel. He then went on a world tour: from 1960 to 1962 he first traveled to Australia on a cargo ship via North Africa, the Panama Canal and Polynesia. There he stayed 1 ½ years in Melbourne , where he worked as an industrial worker. After returning to Switzerland via Indonesia and India, he initially lived in the canton of Aargau and worked in publishing. In addition, Schmidli, who had already started writing in the 1950s , continued his literary activities; In 1966 his first volume of stories was published by Benziger Verlag . From 1967 Schmidli lived in Basel. From 1968 to 1978 he was co-editor of the literary magazine rotpunkt , from 1979 Schmidli freelance writer in Basel.

Werner Schmidli's work includes novels, short stories, poems, plays, radio plays and television scripts. While his early works can be assigned to workers' literature, the later ones, from around the eighties onwards, had more general existential problems on the subject. His last works are mainly crime fiction .
