Werner Skrotzki (born October 21, 1950 in Hannoversch-Münden ) is a German physicist.

Scientific career

Werner Skrotzki studied physics at the University of Göttingen from 1971 to 1977 and did his doctorate there in 1980 under Peter Haasen on the subject of the mechanisms of plasticity of ion crystals . He then took up a position as a research assistant at the Institute for Metal Physics at the University of Göttingen. From 1983 to 1984 he held a postdoc at the Materials Science Department of Cornell University in Ithaca , NY, USA and then worked again as a research assistant at the University of Göttingen until 1989, this time at the Institute for Geology and Dynamics of the Lithosphere . During this time he carried out research on the continental deep drilling project in the Upper Palatinate . In 1990 he completed his habilitation on the subject of the geological significance of microstructure studies using transmission electron microscopy , as a result of which he received a three-year research grant from the Heisenberg Foundation.

In 1993 he was appointed professor of metal physics at the Institute for Crystallography and Solid State Physics at the Technical University of Dresden . From 2003 to 2009 he was dean of studies and from 2004 to 2017 managing director of the Institute for Structural Physics at TU Dresden. During this time he held one-month visiting professorships at the University of Metz in 2002, 2003 and 2006 . Since 2016 he has held a vacancy senior professorship at the TU Dresden.

In 2011 he received the Tammann commemorative coin from the German Society for Materials Science and the THERMEC Distinguished Award 2018 for his research achievements .
