Werner Starke (mountaineer)

Werner Starke (* 1936 ) is a German geographer, mountaineer and photographer.

Live and act

Werner Starke worked as a scientist at the German Photo Library in the Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library . In the 1970s he toured the Soviet Union several times . In 1975 he took part in an expedition to Peak Communism in the Pamir Mountains , which at 7,495 m were the highest mountain accessible to GDR citizens at the time, and according to his own statements also reached the summit. In later publications it is rumored that Werner Starke himself should not have reached the summit.

Werner Starke was director of the Deutsche Fotothek from February 1989 to April 1999, succeeding Walter May .

He designed the Saxon Wine Trail .
