Werner Tiemann

Werner Tiemann (born March 1, 1933 in Lage (Lippe) ; † July 2, 2002 in Lechenich ) was a German handball player, teacher and local politician.

Study time and handball

After graduating from high school, Werner Tiemann studied mathematics and sports for teaching at secondary schools. During his studies he played field handball at SV Bayer 04 , with which he became German champion in 1956. He had 16 appearances in the German national handball team and was part of the winning team at the 1959 World Cup .

For winning the world championship, he was awarded the silver bay leaf on June 21, 1959.

After completing his studies, he decided to go to school.

In 1964 he moved with his family to Lechenich, after taking up a position as a teacher for mathematics and sports at the municipal Progymnasium Lechenich . After a few years he became the headmaster's deputy. In 1982 he took over the management of the school , which has since been expanded into a grammar school. Through its involvement in school sports, the school entered into cooperation with many local sports clubs in order to give particularly gifted students training opportunities in their preferred disciplines outside of school lessons. This led to numerous successes in school sports competitions. Events such as the skiing for middle and high school students, which has been part of school sport since 1980, or the soccer tournament for former students that has been taking place since 1986, for which he donated a trophy, were set up at his instigation.

After 30 years of work, he retired in 1994 for health reasons.

Local politics

Werner Tiemann was active from 1969 to 1979 and 1988 to 1991 as a member of the SPD in the city council of Erftstadt . From December 15, 1969 to May 23, 1974 he was mayor. Between 1979 and 1989 he was a competent citizen on several committees. Social and school issues as well as the promotion of sport and the creation of new sports facilities were the focus of his political work. From 1976 to 1979 and from 1984 to 1994 he was a member of the district council of the Rhein-Erft district .

End of life

Werner Tiemann withdrew from all public offices after his retirement. He died on July 2, 2002 where he lived in Lechenich.

Commemoration

Every year in the run-up to Christmas, the traditional former football tournament for the Werner Tiemann Memorial Cup takes place in Lechenich, to which several hundred former students travel. Your teams compete against the current student teams and the teaching team for the cup. The proceeds have been used for several years to design the upper level rooms of the grammar school.
