Werner Ziegler (soldier)
Werner Ziegler (born April 30, 1916 in Hausach ; † April 15, 2001 in Oftersheim ) was a German professional soldier , lieutenant colonel in the Wehrmacht and colonel in the Bundeswehr .
biography
Werner Ziegler joined the Wehrmacht infantry in 1936 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1939. After participating in the Western campaign , he took over an infantry company that he led during the Balkan campaign and at the beginning of the war against the Soviet Union . In the battles on the Crimean peninsula , on the Mius, in the Kuban area and near Novorossiysk , he was distinguished by particular bravery. There he served as the commander of a grenadier regiment, a staff officer in a tank division and, most recently, as a lieutenant colonel in the 5th Army Corps . For his achievements he was u. a. awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. At the end of the war he was taken prisoner , from which he was released in 1946.
In 1956 Ziegler joined the Bundeswehr and was most recently commander of the 19 Armored Grenadier Brigade . He retired in 1968 with the rank of colonel .
