Werner Zumsteg (born November 21, 1938 in Zurich ; † August 8, 2018 there ) was a Swiss music teacher and flautist .

Life

Zumsteg studied flute in Zurich with André Jaunet (1961–1964) and in Berlin with Karlheinz Zöller (1964/65) and attended master classes with James Galway . From 1965 he was solo flutist in the Baden-Baden Municipal Orchestra and formed the Zumsteg – Hofer – Derungs trio with Heinz Hofer and Martin Derungs. In 1970 he took up an apprenticeship for flute and school music at the Zürcher Kantonsschule Wiedikon , which he held until his retirement (2002). He was also part of the internationally active ensembles Pro Arte Wind Quintet (from 1973) and Musica Orphea (from 1974).

Zumsteg also premiered contemporary music on various occasions. For example, in 1966 with the Zumsteg – Hofer – Derungs trio, the composition Mobili a tre (for flute, clarinet and piano) by Hugo Pfister, in 1972 with Susanne Hess for a message in a bottle (for flute and harpsichord) by Walter Baer or in 1989 with Elisabeth Bachmann Canto XVII dedicated to him (for flute and piano) by Ermano Maggini . He was also involved in the visual arts - even as a designer from a young age - and maintained close friendships with the graphic artist Werner Zryd, who designed the record covers for the Musica Orphea ensemble, and with the Swiss painters Ernst Egli, Hans Hunold and Gianfranco Bernasconi.
