The Werra bridge near Immelborn is a half-timbered bridge over the Werra , which was built at the end of the 1880s when the Immelborn – Liebenstein-Schweina railway was built. In front of and behind the Werra bridge, a flood bridge was also built to ensure sufficient water flow during floods .
history
On November 28, 1887, the states of Saxony-Meiningen and Hesse-Nassau signed a state treaty to build the railway line - the Werra formed the border between the two states here - and less than two years later, on August 1, 1889, the ceremonial opening took place.
On the night of April 1 and 2, 1945, the Volkssturm tried to stop the advance of American troops by blowing up the Werra Bridge and the neighboring road bridge in front of Barchfeld . The blast damaged the bridge pier and the bridge collapsed on one side. Train traffic could not be resumed until January 21, 1946, but it was noted in the files that the bridge class at that time had to be reduced from H to J due to insufficient material. With the official closure of operations in 1973, the bridge lost its function; in the previous years it was used to park freight wagons up to a distance of 1.5 miles. In 1989 the structure was given a new coat of paint against corrosion . There are tracks on the bridge structure to this day.
