Japan Rail Pass
The Japan Rail Pass ( Japanese ジ ャ パ ン レ ー ル パ ス japan rēru pasu ) is a train pass sold by the Japan Railway Group and can be used on most of the JR Group transportation. The train pass is designed to promote travel and tourism across Japan .
Rail Pass
The Rail Pass is available in two versions, one for each of the car classes : Standard Class ( 普通 車 futsū-sha ) and First Class or Green Car ( グ リ ー ン 車 gurīn-sha ). The pass is also limited in time. Passes are available for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days. The table below summarizes prices (in yen ) and time periods for each pass. The voucher ( exchange order , see below) is bought in the respective home country and paid for in local currency, converted according to current exchange rates.

Voucher (Exchange Order)
The Rail Pass is sold by the JR Group, but a voucher must be purchased from a travel agency outside of Japan. The voucher is also sold by Japanese airlines Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways . It cannot be bought within Japan. The voucher itself cannot be used for travel and must be exchanged at a JR ticket counter ( み ど り の 窓 口 midori no madoguchi ) in one of the following JR train stations:

The pass is valid for the use of Japan Railways Group (JR) transport throughout the country in the designated carriage class on the following lines:

- interregional express trains (Limited Express) ( 特急 tokkyū )
- Express trains (Express) ( 急 行 kyūkō )
- Express trains (Rapid ( 快速 kaisoku ) and Special Rapid ( 新 快速 shin-kaisoku ))
- Regional trains (Local) ( 普通 futsū )

Conditions for exchange
The Rail Pass was introduced for tourism and is therefore subject to certain conditions.
Eligibility requirements
The user must meet one of the following two conditions:
- A tourist with a " Temporary Visitor " sticker in his passport. This is usually noted automatically. This passport must be shown when exchanging the voucher, a photocopy is not permitted. (Does not apply to people with a working holiday visa!)
- A Japanese citizen living abroad
- and lives there permanently, right?
- is married to a person who is not a Japanese national who lives in a country other than Japan.
Redeem the voucher
The voucher must be exchanged for the Japan Rail Pass within three months of being issued. The date from which the Japan Rail Pass is to be valid must be specified. This date must be within one month of the voucher being exchanged.
