The Weser Bridge Vlotho is a road bridge over the Weser and, in the course of Mindener Strasse ( Landesstrasse  778), connects the city center of the East Westphalian town of Vlotho on the left bank of the Weser with the district of Uffeln on the right bank of the Weser.

location

The state road 778 runs over the Weser bridge Vlotho, which connects the city center of Vlotho with the right bank of the Weser and at the same time enables city access from the east over the Weser. At the same time, the bridge spans the federal highway 514 and the Elze – Löhne railway line .

description

The S-shaped curved prestressed concrete bridge has five fields in the left foreland area and seven in the right. The beam girder over the Weser is haunched .

history

Before the bridge was built, crossing the Weser in the Vlotho area was only possible with a ferry, which was first mentioned in 1336. In 1875 the approximately 1.5 kilometers eastward Vlotho railway bridge was opened for today's Elze – Löhne line.

Construction of a bridge for road traffic began on March 24, 1927. The concrete arch bridge with elevated roadway was opened to traffic on March 28, 1928. To finance the construction costs, the use was connected with a toll. On April 3, 1945, the bridge was blown up by pioneers of the German Wehrmacht . The repair took about a year and was completed on March 30, 1951. It cost about 550,000 DM.

The alignment of today's bridge was determined in January 1970 and was not based on its predecessor. The connections on the western bank were accompanied by an extensive redesign of the road traffic: The state road 778, which previously ran through the narrow inner city, was relocated to the route of the former Herford small railway along the Forellenbach in order to relieve the city center from the increasing motor traffic. The course of the federal highway 514 , which roughly follows the banks of the Weser, has also been adapted. The intersection area between the two streets was generously redesigned. Preparatory work for the bridge construction took place from autumn 1973. Construction began on August 10, 1978, and finished on August 5, 1981. The official inauguration took place during a bridge festival on September 18 and 19, 1981. The client was the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe with the Minden State Road Construction Office . The construction was carried out by Schäfer-Bauten from Ibbenbüren . After the opening, the old arch bridge was demolished.
