West African Power Pool

The West African Power Pool , WAPP for short ( French : Système d'échanges d'énergie électrique Ouest Africain , EEEOA for short ) is the association of the national electricity companies of the ECOWAS countries with headquarters in Cotonou , Benin . The WAPP was founded in 2000.

Mission and goal

The WAPP orients its work towards the following goals:

  • Creation of an official and broad cooperation among the member states for the generation and transmission of electrical energy with the aim of increasing the overall electricity production and the operational reliability of the networks in the sub-region;
  • Increasing the reliability and quality of the electricity supply across the region;
  • Reduction of network costs in operations;
  • Increase in the investment funds necessary for network expansion through the implementation of cross-border projects;
  • Creating an attractive environment for potential investors;
  • Unification of standards and regulations in the electricity sector;
  • Creation of reliable and transparent mechanisms for payment processing in energy transactions;
  • General increase in energy supply in the region.

history

The founding was decided on the occasion of the 22nd ECOWAS summit in 1999. Its current form goes back to a shelling of the 29th ECOWAS summit on January 12, 2006, the actual founding meeting took place in July 2006 in Cotonou.
