Ethanol factory in West Burlington |
West Burlington is a city in the state of Iowa in the United States . It lies on the plain above the west bank of the Mississippi on the northwestern outskirts of Burlington .
Although a small settlement called Leffleers Station already existed on the site of today's West Burlington parish , it was not until 1882 that the actual foundation date was considered. By that time, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad , which operated one of its main stations in Burlington, had built an area of 1,000 acres it had acquired from the City of Burlington to build wagons and repair locomotives. In order to avoid administrative differences of opinion with the city, the railway company declared the area to be an independent city . While up to 1,600 people were employed on the site in the beginning, the number of employees was drastically reduced after the introduction of diesel operation. In the mid-1960s, the plant was only an employer for 500 employees.
The economic orientation of the community today, after the extensive decline of the originally mainly employing wagon building plant, is largely rural-medium-sized. The companies located there are very diverse; Production facilities for bio-ethanol from agricultural waste are particularly common in the area of the municipality.
West Burlington is connected to the United States' expressway network by US Highway 34 , which runs through the City area, and the north-south junction of US Highway 61 , which runs east of the community. It is also linked to regional air traffic by Burlington Airport , which is about five kilometers as the crow flies to the southeast in the urban area of Burlington.
The community has a high school, West Burlington Arnold Jr./Sr. High School , and the Southeastern Iowa Community College , founded in 1920 , which primarily offers technical courses.
