location

The American Viticultural Area West Elks is located near the community of Paonia in the Delta County administrative unit . The area is surrounded by mountains of the Rocky Mountains and can only be reached via mountain passes. It is named after the nearby West Elk Mountains.

The vineyards of West Elks are at altitudes of 1500 to 1950 meters above sea level, making them the highest in the northern hemisphere. Delta County has warm, sometimes hot summers and cold, snowy winters. In particular, the temperature differences between day and night are sometimes extreme and prolong the vegetation cycle of the vines. In summer it can get very cold at night despite high daytime temperatures. The precipitation (about 400–500 mm annually) is spread over the whole year, while the summer is slightly more humid.
