The island was discovered in 1792 during an expedition by Dionisio Alcalá Galiano and Cayetano Valdés y Flores . They called it Isla Redonda , which means round island . They set up a base in the west of the island and explore the other islands with several smaller boats. While they anchored near the Teakerne Arm , two ships of George Vancouver's expedition were temporarily moored there .
