The West Bohemian Museum in Pilsen is a museum facility in West Bohemia and a center for scientific work in several disciplines. The main building of the museum is located in Pilsen . The museum is an institution of the Plzeňský kraj and is one of the most important museum institutions in the region.

history

In 1888, the Pilsen Council decided to build a new building for the museum. The museum was designed by the architect Josef Škorpil . In 1895 the project work was completed and construction of the neo-renaissance building began. Construction work was completed in 1898. The sculptural decoration of the facade and the stucco decoration of the halls were made according to the designs of the sculptor Celdy Kloučka . In the 1990s, the building was completely reconstructed, including a complete replacement of half-timbering. In November 1998 the museum building was reopened.

An important part of everyday museum life is dedicated to research. The museum has 10 departments: Folklore , Modern History , Prehistory , Middle Ages , Paleontology , Botany , Zoology , Restoration , Department for Archaeological Rescue Excavations and the Museum of Handicrafts . There are currently four permanent exhibitions in the main building: the armory , a collection of Meissen porcelain, archeology of the Pilsen region and regional history.

Branches are the Folklore Museum and the Puppet Museum on the Republic Square, the "Diocese Museum" in the former Franciscan monastery with a permanent exhibition of Christian objects of fine art and the Dr. Šimon Adler Museum in Hartmanice with an exhibition on the history of the Jewish population West Bohemia.
