The WAK - West German Academy for Communication e. V. is a non-profit academy based in Cologne that specializes in education and training in the fields of advertising , marketing and communication .

history

In the mid-1950s, representatives of the media, industrial, commercial and service companies , including the newspaper entrepreneur Kurt Neven DuMont , agreed with the Cologne Chamber of Commerce and Industry to jointly implement practical training and further education for the advertising and marketing sector. They wanted to hire lecturers who were successful in day-to-day business and who established practical projects. For this purpose, teaching content was conceptualized, which should convey what is important according to the ideas of the participants in everyday professional life. As qualified young professionals were hard to find, they founded their own academy in 1956, the Rheinisch-Westfälische Werbefachschule , which was then renamed the West German Academy for Communication in 1968. Today 50 companies, media, agencies and associations from the Cologne area support the educational mission of the association through their membership .

Teaching program

The training offer of the WAK includes two day courses and 8 weekend and evening courses, in which, among other things, the professional training of state-certified business economist in marketing communication at the WAK technical school is offered either as day or part-time training. This is subsidized by the state and is intended for those with a commercial background. Classes take place in Cologne-Bayenthal . This is an advanced training course and by no means a university degree . In the learning agencies and the final exams, the participants should work on and present real practical projects from topic sponsors, i.e. companies, organizations or even individuals from the fields of industry, trade and services.
