The paddle steamer Westerland of the Sylter Dampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft was a side paddle steamer built by the Howaldts shipyard in Kiel , which was used from 1885 as a passenger and supply ship for the North Frisian island of Sylt .

history

The Westerland was to complement the in-service since 1884 steamer 1885 Sylt by Sylt Steamship Company put into service. The company used the ships in the regular service between Hoyerschleuse (on the mainland) and Munkmarsch (on Sylt) to supply the island and to transport people. Side paddle steamers with shallow drafts had proven themselves for operation in the Wadden Sea and could be used almost all year round, except for extreme weather conditions in the winter months.

In the liner service between Munkmarsch and Hoyerschleuse

From the commissioning until March 1902, the ship was led by Captain Albert Klein from Keitum. After his sudden death, Captain Carl Nicolai Christiansen from Westerland took command on June 1, 1902. When he was supposed to take over the newly built Freya , he handed over the ship's command of the Westerland to his cousin Peter Christiansen on May 1, 1904.

Excursion traffic from Husum

In 1926 the paddle steamer was sold to the city of Husum and renamed "Stadt Husum". From there he provided service with up to 200 passengers and restoration on board until 1935 as an excursion ship in the "Halligwelt".

Whereabouts

In 1936 the city of Husum sold the paddle steamer, which was scrapped immediately afterwards.
