history

The brewery was founded in 1861 by the Heimborn brewer Heinrich Schneider as the H. Schneider Brewery in the Grünschen Hof. The brewing water is drawn from its own source in the Rothbachtal nature reserve. At 1.5 ° dH the water is very soft.

In November 1902, the brewery introduced Pilsner-style beer . In 1909 Schneider transferred the brewery to his son Heinrich. At the same time, the company was renamed Westerwald-Brauerei H. Schneider . With the renaming went hand in hand with the strategic goal of becoming the brewery of the Westerwald beyond Hachenburg. Due to the First World War and the consequences of the war, however, the brewery remained at the level of a local brewery.

In 1948, Heinrich and Rudolf Schneider, the third generation, took over management of the brewery. The annual output at this time was 4000 hl. In the following years, the Hachenburger Pils brand developed into the market leader in the Westerwald. Due to consumer preferences, the beer taste was changed from a strong hop aroma to a slightly bitter taste at an early stage. The brewery also tried to raise awareness of the homeland of the Westerwald through advertising. The output rose to 180,000 hl in 1981.

Heiner Schneider led the company in the fourth generation from 1982. The output reached the 200,000 hl limit in the mid-1980s. In addition to the Westerwald, the distribution area also included the regions bordering to the north for the first time.

As a reaction to changed drinking behavior, the beer types on offer were expanded and diversified. As one of the first West German breweries, the brewery introduced a black beer in 1994.

Due to a fire in the brewery's storage cellar in September 2006, it had to be rebuilt for € 4.4 million. The capacity was increased from 25,000 hl to 100,000 hl. The annual output in 2007 was 100,000 hl. The draft beer share was 20%.

Jens Geimer has been running the brewery in the fifth generation since 2009.

The output in 2010 was 75,000 hl. The Pils variety is by far the mainstay of the brewery (2014). The company employs 60 people and has its main sales area in the Westerwald and neighboring regions. The brewery has been exporting to China since 2012.
