history

In the period after the Second World War, especially in the 1950s and 1960s, not only were numerous evening grammar schools established, but also a new form of adult education: the college.

In this context, the Westfalen-Kolleg Paderborn was founded as a state institute in 1964, which gave elementary and vocational school students the opportunity to acquire higher education entrance qualifications, especially in the rural region of the former Hochstift Paderborn. Classes initially took place in pavilions on Benhauser Strasse.

Since 1975, learning and teaching has been taking place in the former college of education on Fürstenweg, the premises of which were renovated and modernized between 2002 and 2005 by the construction and property company (BLB) NRW. In the course of time, different concepts of classroom organization have been developed. From 1964 to 1970, classes were taught in the same class as at the grammar school and the Abitur was acquired after five semesters.

From 1970 to 1981, lessons were based on the so-called Paderborn model, in which, according to the principles of individualization and differentiation of the course, the learners could take the school-leaving exam after four to six semesters and, in addition to a compulsory area of subjects in their elective area, could form specializations . Within the given framework of the model, the students could choose their courses and their teachers and have a say in the subjects of the courses.

Since 1981 the Paderborn College has been teaching according to the course system, which is based on the upper secondary level. In the introductory phase of the first two semesters, students learn in a class, the following four semesters in the course system. In 1989 the evening school morning course was introduced. All ZBW institutions have been called the Weiterbildungskolleg since 2000. As a third area in addition to college and evening grammar school in the morning, the part-time Abitur-Online course has been offered since summer 2002. Since 2008, all courses at the Westfalen-Kolleg have been integrated into the central Abitur exams.
