The Western Qinling Tunnel ( Chinese  西 秦岭 隧道 , Pinyin Xī qínlǐng suìdào ) is part of the Chongqing – Lanzhou railway line and with a length of 28.2 kilometers it is the second longest railway tunnel in the People's Republic of China after the New Guanjiao Tunnel (as of 2019).

description

The Western Qinling Tunnel was built as part of the 862 km long railway line between Lanzhou , the capital of Gansu Province , and the government-direct city of Chongqing ( Lan-Yu Railway , 兰 渝 铁路 ). The tunnel is located in the Wudu District area of Longnan City, southeast of Gansu. The northern tunnel opening is in the municipality of Toufang (透 防 乡) and the southern one in Laopandi (老 盘 底). The tunnel structure crosses under the western section of the Qinling Mountains, which in this area reach a height of between 1000 and 2400 m. The maximum coverage of the tunnel is 1400 m.

The tunnel construction began in August 2008. A tunnel boring machine with a length of 180 meters and a weight of 1,800 tons was used during construction. In addition, the tunneling was carried out using the drilling and blasting method. The excavation diameter was 10.23 meters. Considerable technical difficulties had to be overcome when building the tunnel due to problematic geological conditions. One tunnel tube was completed on November 29, 2013 and the second on July 19, 2014.

On December 26, 2016, the section between Min County in Dingxi Prefecture and Guangyuan Prefecture in Sichuan , on which the tunnel is located, was opened to rail traffic, and the entire Lan-Yu Railway was opened on December 29 , 2016 September 2017.

The main client was the China Railway Group .
