The Westport Town Farm is a 40  acres (16.2  hectares ) comprehensive nature reserve near the town of Westport in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization.

history

From the beginning of the colonial era, the area was used commercially for agricultural purposes until it was converted into a retreat for sick and needy people in the mid-19th century. The operation continued in parallel, and for more than 100 years the facility soon known as Town Farm offered shelter for the elderly and the weak as well as for orphans and vagabonds; The deaf and mute Lurana Manchester came to the farm at the age of 39 and lived there until her death at the age of 92. The company operated successfully into the 20th century, but with the increase in government humanitarian programs such as the New Deal, it steadily lost its importance and finally had to close in 1956. For more than 30 years, volunteers then worked hard to protect the property from decay and development. Today it is jointly preserved for the public by the City of Westport and the Trustees of Reservations.

Protected area

The farm, located directly on the coast, offers visitors various sights. These include the main house preserved from the colonial era, several auxiliary buildings and extensive stone walls. The current flowing through the reserve Westport River provides one of the largest areas of brackish water - tidal - marsh in Massachusetts and attracts gulls and ospreys , which are looking for crabs and small fish. A circular trail approximately 1  mi (1.6  km ) runs through the area. Since autumn 2008, the trustees have also been running a community garden on the farm , the proceeds of which are made available to those in need.
