Whakapapa Village is a small settlement in the Ruapehu District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located around 10 km north-northwest of the summit of Mount Ruapehu volcano and around 9 km southwest of the summit of Mount Ngauruhoe volcano in Tongariro National Park . The New Zealand State Highway 48 runs through the settlement and connects it on the one hand with the ski area of Mount Ruapehu and downhill with the New Zealand State Highway 47 , via which the settlement is connected to the rest of the region.
tourism
The settlement is characterized by tourism. In winter it is the accommodation for the most important ski areas of New Zealand's North Island, the Whakapapa Ski Field and in summer the starting point for hikes in the Tongariro National Park .
Attractions
The image of the settlement is shaped by the Hotel Chateau Tongariro . The hotel's foundation stone was laid on February 16, 1929 by then Minister of Health Arthur Stallworthy .
