Whiskeytown was an alternative country band formed in Raleigh , North Carolina , USA in 1994 . After their breakup in 1999, their creative head Ryan Adams started a successful solo career, and Caitlin Cary released several solo albums .

history

Whiskeytown was founded in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1994 by Ryan Adams , then 20 . Caitlin Cary as violinist and second lead singer, Phil Wandscher on guitar , Steve Grothmann on bass and Eric Gilmore on drums were other founding members.

In 1995 the first EP Angels was released on the independent label Mood Food , followed in 1996 by the debut album Faithless Street , which received good reviews in the trade press, namely No Depression magazine. A celebrated appearance at the South by Southwest Festival brought the band a contract with the major label Geffen .

In 1997 Mood Food released Rural Free Delivery , a collection of early recordings. In the same year published by Geffen then Stranger's Almanac , which Rice and drummer Steven Terry has already been included with the new bassist Jeff. Soon after the release, Phil Wandscher also left the band.

After the tour to Stranger's Almanac , during which Adams must have apparently misbehaved more than once (quote: Well, we were called Whiskeytown! ), He and Cary found each other as the only remaining band members. Mike Daly, who masters various other instruments besides keyboards and guitar, joined the band and was co-author of many pieces on the next album Pneumonia , which was completed in 1999 with a changing line-up. It was only released on Lost Highway in 2001 due to various upheavals in the record industry , after both Ryan Adams and Caitlin Cary had released their first solo works.
