Whitehorse is an Australian doom metal and sludge band from Melbourne , which was founded in 2004.

history

The band was formed in 2004 and initially consisted of singer Peter Hyde, guitarists Brent Stegeman and Dase Beard, Mark Groves (electronics) and drummer Emile Askey. The first releases came in the form of live albums in 2005, one of which was recorded during a tour of Japan . Beard and Stegeman left the group that same year. The guitarists Yeap Heng Shen and Bob Nekrasov joined in as replacements. In the following years the line-up changed several times. Meanwhile, tours through Europe (21 gigs in 13 countries) and the USA (20 gigs in 15 countries) as well as gigs with Om , Zeni Geva , Wolves in the Throne Room , Monarch! and Nasum held. She was also seen at the Metal for the Brain . In 2007 and 2011 the first two studio albums were released with Whitehorse and Progression . In 2014, Stegeman returned to the group. In the same year, the third studio album was released under the name Raised into Darkness . In their career, the band has also toured New Zealand to date , and has appeared at festivals such as the Roadburn Festival , Heavy Days in Doomtown and the Maryland Deathfest . She has also toured Australia with Meth Drinker and performed in Melbourne with Neurosis , Full of Hell and Deafheaven .

style

According to Brian Giffin in his Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal , the band plays a mix of Sludge and Doom Metal . In his review of Raised into Darkness, Mark-Oliver Schröder from Ox-Fanzine described the album as a mix of Sludge and Doom Metal, although the speed of the songs was rather subdued. The riffs are “heavy” and the group is looking for their fulfillment “not in instrumental virtuosity, but in transcendent noise attacks and temporal stretching”. The vocals range “from deep growls to aggressive, accusatory nagging”. Alex Hannan from collective-zine.co.uk also reviewed the album and described the music as Doom Metal, with slow and heavy riffs and vocals that sometimes sound "decayed" and sometimes rough.
