Ram sprouts ( Nigritella rubra subsp. Widderi ) was named after the Austrian botanist Felix Joseph Aries named (1892-1974) and belongs to the genus vanilla orchid ( Nigritella ) of the family of orchids (Orchidaceae). However, some authors also regard it as a subspecies of the red cabbage rose and is then called Nigritella rubra subsp. widderi (Teppner & E. Klein ) H. Baumann & R. Lorenz .
description
The perennial herbaceous plant reaches heights of 5 to 20 centimeters. The inflorescence is short or hemispherical-short ovate. The flowers initially appear dark pink, later becoming increasingly lighter to almost white. The inflorescence is thus more or less pronounced two-tone. All bracts are darker at the top than at the base.
Nigritella widderi is the earliest blooming cabbage rose: it blooms from mid-June to early August.
Occurrence
The distribution area includes the northern limestone Alps from Bavaria east to Austria . In the southern Limestone Alps, only widespread in the Grazer Bergland and in Abruzzo .
Lean-lime lawns are preferred as the location.
particularities
Like all species of the Kohlröschen genus, the plant smells intensely of vanilla . Ram's cabbage is tetraploid ; that is, it has four sets of chromosomes . The seed formation takes place asexually.
