Wiel Coerver (born December 3, 1924 in Kerkrade , † April 22, 2011 ibid) was a Dutch football player and coach . Because of his progressive training methods, he was also known as " Albert Einstein of football" and is considered one of the pioneering football teachers beyond his time .
Career as a player
Coerver played for the former Kerkrader football club VV Bleijerheide since 1936 . In 1954, the Dutch Football Association introduced professional football and thus licensed games. For this reason, Coerver switched from Voetbalvereniging Bleijerheide to Rapid JC, in which the Bleijerheide club was merged in the same year. Wiel Coerver thus belonged to the first generation of Dutch football professionals. With his new club Rapid JC, from which today's professional club Roda Kerkrade emerged, Coerver became Dutch football champions in 1956. In 1959 he ended his career as a player.
Career as a coach
In 1959 Coervers began as a coach. His greatest success as a coach was in 1974 winning the Dutch championship and simultaneously triumphing in the UEFA Cup with Feyenoord Rotterdam . Some of his protégés at the time also played for the Netherlands at the World Cup , in which the Dutch team was ultimately only subject to the DFB selection in the final.
As a result, Coerver coached other clubs in the honor division , including Sparta Rotterdam , Go Ahead Eagles and Roda Kerkrade . In 2007 Coerver was still active as a trainer despite his old age.
Coerver method
Coerver gained particular fame outside of the Netherlands through the training method named after him, the Coerver method , which is primarily geared towards excellent ball control and the basic technique for it.
His method, which he made known beyond the borders of the Netherlands by traveling, especially from 1977 onwards, is still popular today, especially in the training of youth players. It is used, for example, by Manchester United , a club known for its successful youth work .
