Wieland Kiess

Wieland Kiess (born March 23, 1958 in Schwenningen am Neckar ) is a German pediatrician and university professor . Kiess' main areas of work are general paediatrics and adolescent medicine as well as endocrinology and diabetology.

Vita

Wieland Kiess graduated from the Goldberg-Gymnasium in Sindelfingen in 1977 . From 1977 to 1979 he completed the preclinical semesters at the University of Tübingen , from 1979 to 1983 he studied at the Technical University of Munich, at the Rechts der Isar Clinic . In 1981 there was a study stay in Community Medicine, at St. Thomas Hospital London and in 1982 another in Endocrinology at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

From 1983 to 1992 Wieland Kiess was an assistant doctor at the University Children's Clinic in Munich, interrupted by a three-year stay in the USA as a visiting research fellow at the National Institutes of Health . After becoming a senior physician in Munich, he moved to the University of Gießen , where he was deputy head of the Department of General Pediatrics and Neonatology from 1994 to 1997 . In 1998 Wieland Kiess was appointed Professor of General Pediatrics at the University of Leipzig . With this he became director of the Leipzig University Children's Clinic. In 2010 he was appointed to the board of directors of the large research project LIFE (Leipzig Research Center for Civilization Diseases) . He was also active in the Leipzig Integrated Research Area Obesity Diseases as well as in numerous other joint projects at the University of Leipzig in executive or executive committees.

Offices

Among other things, Wieland Kiess was dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig (2002–2005), medical-scientific director of the Department of Women's and Pediatric Medicine at the Leipzig University Hospital (2010–2013), President of the German Diabetes Society, Conference President of the German Society for Pediatrics and adolescent medicine (2002) and conference president of the German Diabetes Society and the German Obesity Society (2014). For many years he was a member of the Senate of the University of Leipzig. He is a member of numerous German, European and North American specialist societies and (co-) editor of several specialist journals. From 2011 to 2012 he was President of the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology and Chairman of the 51st Annual Meeting of the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) in 2012. In 2016, ESPE awarded Kiess the Andrea Prader Prize, its highest award.
