from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vienna String Sextet was founded in 1981 and was one of the most successful chamber music ensembles in this genre.

With the aim of cultivating the string sextet and quintet literature in the traditional Viennese sound style , it met with approval from the public and critics from the start. Extensive European tours were undertaken in the first few years of its existence, which were soon followed by invitations to New York and Japan . Even at chamber music festivals, such as For example, in Lockenhaus and at festivals ( Salzburg Festival , Vienna and Berlin Festival Weeks , Edinburgh Festival ) they were repeatedly guests.

In 1991 there was a cyclical performance of all Mozart string quintets, followed by a cycle with the sextets and quintets by Johannes Brahms . The highlight was the world premiere of Richard Strauss ' Metamorphosen in the original version for string sextet and double bass in 1994.

Preferred guest soloists were the clarinetist Sabine Meyer and the pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja .

In 2004 the Viennese string sextet gave its official farewell performance at Wigmore Hall in London . The last work on the program was Schönberg's Transfigured Night . Before that, it said goodbye to the Austrian audience at the Wiener Festwochen and the Styriarte .
