The Wiener Waldhornverein is an association of professional horn players, students and amateurs who have made it their mission to bring the Viennese horn to the fore in concerts. Founded in 1883, it is "the oldest association of horn players in the world". At the same time, the Wiener Waldhornverlag ( WWV for short ) is part of the association , which has set itself the task of publishing both original compositions and arrangements for French horn .

history

The Austrian imperial couple Franz Joseph I and Elisabeth celebrated their silver anniversary in Vienna in the spring of 1879 . On the occasion of this festival, the Viennese decorative artist Hans Makart set up a large pageant through the city on April 27, 1879 , which led from the Vienna Prater to the Ringstrasse in the city center.

One of the wagons from the pageant in 1879, which was set up by Hans Makart. The hunting carriage of the time in the so-called Makart pageant and its occupation with horn players is considered the cradle of the Viennese French horn club , which was then founded in 1883.

Joseph Schantl as principal horn of the Vienna Court Opera occupied the hunting carriage and played four-part hunting music together with his horn colleagues Franz Pichler, Anton Wunderer and Emil Wipperich. The move with the horn music and this four-part line-up were a great success. Four years later, in 1883, the idea of founding a horn club “for the purpose of socializing and caring for the French horn” became reality. Joseph Schantl gathered the First Viennese Horn Club , composed for it, created a multi-volume horn school and performed with the growing number of horn players. The name was later changed: the Wiener Waldhornverein grew out of the horn players' club. Johannes Brahms is one of the founding members of the association . For the long existence of this institution it was important that almost all relevant Viennese music institutions in which the French horn is blown also became active in the Wiener Waldhornverein, be it the Vienna Philharmonic , the Johann Strauss Capelle , the Vienna Opera , the Vienna Conservatory and others .

The association has had different names in its history, including for political reasons, such as the “Association for the Care of French Horn Music” in Vienna . In 1983 the association celebrated its centenary in Vienna.
