The Wiesensee is an artificially created lake in the Westerwald that was dammed up in 1971 . The lake is about 80 hectares and is located in the Westerwaldkreis in the area of Stahlhofen am Wiesensee (on the western shore of the lake), Pottum (on the northeastern shore of the lake) and Winnen (in the south).
Most of the lake is open to recreational use, only a small area in the southeast with an inflow belongs to the Seebachtal nature reserve . The tributaries of the lake are the Hüttenbach and the Seebach .

history

A lake near Stahlhofen and Pottum was mentioned in a document as early as 1270. At the end of the 18th century, this area of water was completely silted up and became the Seewies marshland .

In 1971 an interest group consisting of today's neighboring communities dammed the streams in the area of this swamp. In addition to promoting tourism and improving the landscape, the aim was to improve the use of fishermen. In 1974, a natural outdoor pool with a lawn was set up at Palzhahn near Pottum . Since 1983/84 there has been a private campsite near the lake outlet near Stahlhofen . A managed raft has been operating regularly on the lake since 1984 . In 1986/1987 a sailing harbor and a promenade were built on the banks of the municipality of Pottum. In 1993, an 18-hole golf course with an attached 9-hole short course and a driving range opened on the Winner lake side , and in 1995 Bensing's sports and health academy on Wiesensee , a hotel with 140 beds , was right next to it . The hotel has been managed by Lindner Hotels AG since 1998 . In 2003, the Cafe Seewies opened in a log cabin on the Winner Ufer , and a few years later the tourist information office of the Westerburg community.

Problems and Perspectives

The silting up of the shallow water in recent years and the associated algae infestation endanger the continued existence of the lake in its previous form. For this reason, it is planned to remove approx. 460,000 m² of sediment from the lake and reduce the lake area by approx. 10 hectares. This project and the associated costs and planning (construction of a dam, expansion of the golf course, conversion of areas) are the subject of sometimes very controversial discussions within the surrounding local communities, the community of Westerburg and the state government . The extensive financing of the desludging by state funds is ensured (as of November 28, 2014).

Recreational facilities

The Wiesensee is a popular holiday and recreational destination. Several hotels - including a luxury hotel with a golf course - are in close proximity to the shore. An approx. 6.5 km long circular hiking trail leads around the lake. The Wiesensee is also suitable for windsurfers and sailors. However, the siltation of the lake increases from year to year. In the late summer of 2008, large parts of the lake were covered by a layer of algae about 10 centimeters thick, which was created by the shallow water depth as a result of the siltation.

Regular events

The lake is fished once a year, usually in the third week of October, and drained completely. In addition, the local sailing club "Wällerwind" Pottum organizes various regattas every year.
