Wighart von Koenigswald

Wighart von Koenigswald (born September 11, 1941 in Potsdam ) is a German vertebrate paleontologist .

He is the son of the writer Harald von Koenigswald (1906–1971) and Marie Helene Freiin von Falkenhausen (1900–1987) and nephew of the paleoanthropologist Gustav Heinrich Ralph von Koenigswald (1902–1982).

Von Koenigswald studied at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München , where he received his doctorate in 1969 under Richard Dehm . From 1971 to 1975 he worked as a research assistant in the Palecology Special Research Area at the University of Tübingen. From 1977 to 1987 he was curator at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt , after his habilitation in 1980 he was a private lecturer at the University of Frankfurt, became an honorary professor in 1986 and was full professor of palaeontology at the Steinmann Institute for Geology, Mineralogy and Paleontology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University since 1987 Bonn . From 1998 to 2000 he was dean of the university.

Von Koenigswald dealt, among other things, with the Rott fossil deposit and the mammalian fauna of the Messel pit . The main focus of his work is the microstructure of mammalian teeth ( enamel pattern ).

He is an external member of the Academy in Cracow. From 2001 to 2003 he was President of the Paleontological Society . In 2007 he became an honorary member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology .

He is married and has two daughters.
