Wikbold from wages

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wikbold von Lohn († July 19, 1312 ) was canon (1292-1310), cathedral clerk (1303-1306) and provost (1307-1310) at St. Paulus Cathedral in Münster and canon in Cologne.

Life

Origin and family

Wikbold von Lohn was born as the son of the married couple Hermann von Lohn and Gertrud von Holte, daughter of the noble lord Hermann von Holte and niece of the Archbishop of Cologne, Wigbold von Holte . His family belonged to the noble lords of Lohn .

Career and work

Wikbold was a staunch opponent of Bishop Otto and played a key role in his voting out. The latter wanted to excommunicate and suspend him and Otto von Bentheim because of significant differences. In the cathedral chapter an alliance was formed against the bishop, so that he was deposed in October 1306. Konrad von Berg was elected bishop's successor, with Pope Clement V conceding this election on March 18, 1310, expressly disapproving of the behavior of Wikbold and the other opponents of the deposed bishop. The Dompropstei, owned by Engelbert von Tecklenburg until 1301 , was taken over by him in 1306 after Otto was deposed and remained in his possession until the end of 1310. In that year he stepped back into the layman's position and on January 29, 1311 he became engaged to Agnes von Kleve, daughter of Dietrich von Kleve . His request to save the family from extinction was not fulfilled, because he died childless on July 19, 1312. He was buried near the Stephen altar in St. Paul Cathedral in Münster.
