Life

Chain studied at the Mining Institute of the Azerbaijani Soviet Socialist Republic in Baku and worked for the state oil company in Azerbaijan until 1938. From 1938 to 1941 he was at the Azerbaijan State Oil Institute. In 1940 he received his doctorate at the State Research Institute for Exploration in Leningrad . From 1941 to 1945 he did his military service in an air defense regiment in Baku. From 1945 he was at the Geological Institute of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences and dealt with the geology of Azerbaijan and its tectonics , about which he published monographs. In 1947 he completed his habilitation (Russian doctorate) on possible oil and gas deposits in the southeastern Caucasus. In 1949 he became professor of petroleum geology in Baku and in 1954 he went to Moscow as a professor at Lomonosov University .

In 1987 he received the State Prize of the USSR and in 1995 the State Prize of the Russian Federation . He was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences , since 1966 as a corresponding member and since 1987 as a full member. In 1993 he received the Lomonosov Prize and in 1992 the Alexander Karpinsky gold medal. He was an honorary member of the Geological Society of London , the Geological Society of America , the French and Bulgarian Geological Societies. In 1991 he received the Gustav Steinmann Medal for paving the way for plate tectonic ideas in Eastern Europe and Asia and for having contributed significantly to the understanding of the global development of the continental crust through the publication of geotectonic maps and textbooks (laudatory speech).

He dealt with geotectonics especially in the Soviet Union and the connections with petroleum geology. Later he dealt with cyclical phenomena in geology such as seismic and volcanic activity cycles, possible cosmic causes (he believed to have discovered connections with the sunspot cycle) and effects on the environment and the earth's climate.
