Viktor Pavlovich Kalygin

Viktor Pavlovich Kalygin ( Russian Виктор Павлович Калыгин , scientific transliteration Viktor Pavlovič Kalygin , French Victor Kalyguine ; born October 18, 1950 in Kovrov , Vladimir Oblast , † December 4, 2004 in Moscow ) was a Russian Celtologist .

Life

After studying Indo-European - including Celtic - Languages at the Leningrad State University Kalygin had since 1975 a postgraduate course at the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR held. In 1979, he put his Inaugural -Dissertation " Особенности языка древнейшей ирландской поэзии в сравнительно-историческом освещении " ( The specifics of the old Irish language in comparative-historical observation before). In collaboration with - 1989 its significant appeared Andrei Alexandrovich Koroljew created - Introduction to Celtic philology ( Введение в кельтскую филологию ).

From 1990 to 1992 Kalygin worked in Germany as a scholarship holder of the A. von Humboldt Fund, first at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg , then at the University of Bonn with Karl Horst Schmidt . In 1993 he taught as a visiting professor at the Chair of Celtic Research at Harvard University .

After his return to Russia, Kalygin continued his studies in the field of Celtology. In 1997 he completed his habilitation with the thesis " Истоки древнеирландской мифопоэтической традиции " ( sources of the old Irish mythopoetic tradition ). Since May 2001, Kalygin was deputy director of the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences for scientific work and from 2002 head of the department for Indo-European languages. His Etymological Dictionary of Celtic Theonyms was published posthumously in 2006.
