Vilkhovets ( Ukrainian Вільховець ; Russian Ольховец Olchowez ) is a village in the center of the Ukrainian Cherkassy Oblast with about 3000 inhabitants (2001).
The village, first mentioned in writing in 1633, is the only place in the district council of the same name in the southwest of Zvenyhorodka Rajon .
The village is located on the N 16 trunk road and on the banks of the Popivka ( Попівка ), a 26 km long tributary of the Hnylyj Tikytsch 10 km southwest of the district center Zvenyhorodka and about 115 km southwest of the Cherkasy oblast center .
There is a museum and a monument in memory of Vyacheslav Chornovil .
Personalities
- On March 16, 1664, the hetman of the Ukrainian Cossacks and voivode Ivan Wyhowskyj (1608-1664) was executed in the village.
- The German athlete Rudolf Harbig (1913–1944) died here in a combat mission as a paratrooper in March 1944.
