The Wild Sky Wilderness is a 431 square kilometer wilderness area in the western Cascade Mountains of Washington state . The wilderness area is within the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest north of US Highway 2 and the towns of Index and Skykomish . The area flanks the North Fork of the Skykomish River and the Beckler River , but does not include them. The Henry M. Jackson Wilderness is in the neighborhood to the east and northeast. The highest point in the area is the 1,903 meter high Gunn Peak .

Until President Obama's expansion of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in 2014, the Wild Sky Wilderness was remarkable in that it was the first wilderness area designated by federal law since 1984. In addition, unlike other wilderness areas in the Cascade Mountains, the area protects significant areas of highly productive temperate rainforests .

history

Several attempts were made to protect the Wild Sky Wilderness before legislation was passed. Before 2007 was Wild Sky Bill in committee by Mr Richard Pombo of California blocked, which was not re-elected of 2006. President George W. Bush was receptive to the proposal.

In February 2007, Senator Patty Murray and MP Rick Larsen tabled a bill to protect the Wild Sky Wilderness. This passed by Congress and was approved in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee . Before the draft was passed to the Senate for a vote, however, the Republican MP Tom Coburn from Oklahoma vetoed ( Senate Hold ), so that this draft never came to the vote.

The Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008, which also established the Wild Sky Wilderness, passed the US Senate on April 10, 2008, and the House of Representatives just under three weeks later on April 29. President Bush signed the bill on May 8, 2008.

Private land

At the time of the Wild Sky Wilderness designation, there were 8.1 square kilometers of private land within the boundaries. Since 2003, the Wilderness Land Trust and the Cascade Land Conservancy have acquired about a third of that land. Efforts to convert the rest into this form of ownership will continue.
