Wildburg

The Wildburg is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle on the Wildburghöhe in the Soonwald , near Sargenroth in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate ( Germany ).

history

The castle is probably an imperial castle that was built to protect and manage the imperial territories in the area. It was staffed with Reich ministerials , who became increasingly independent. Above all, the Lords of Wiltburg played an important role and had their ancestral seat at the castle in the 13th to 15th centuries. Already in 1286 several owners appear in documents, so it was a Ganerbeburg . In the course of time, next to the gentlemen von Wiltberg (in several lines) u. a. the gentlemen of Metzenhausen , the gentlemen of Sabershausen and the gentlemen of Buch as co-owners. The Count Palatine acquired all of the castle's shares by 1486 . As early as 1410, the shares at that time were allocated to the new Duchy of Pfalz-Simmern . In the 17th century the castle deteriorated more and more, in the 18th century it is described as completely dilapidated and uninhabited.

investment

The castle complex forms an oval approx. 100 by 140 meters. The district is bounded by semicircular trenches . In the center of the complex is an elongated ridge that divides the castle into two halves and was self-built. This is probably the upper castle mentioned in a document, on which there are remains of a tower.

The rock ridge is protected as a natural monument, the entire complex as a cultural monument .
