The Wilde Sau , also called Saubach , is a left tributary of the Elbe . The Wild Sau valley is part of the Left Elbe Valleys landscape protection area .
Surname
The name is probably of Slavic origin , which is also suggested by the names of neighboring Elbe tributaries. It could be based on the same linguistic root as the Sava / Save river tributary . The Slavic name probably had the meaning of torrent , which is likely to be due to the relatively steep gradient in the (upper) lower reaches of the Wild Sau.
As a result of popular, etymological name interpretation, the forecast was that a brook with their piglets had met while rooting on the meadow to a source. Bronze sculptures on the Wilsdruffer market square illustrate this legend.
geography
The Wilde Sau rises in the Tharandt forest in Pohrsdorf , runs mainly in a north-northeast direction, flows through u. a. the town of Wilsdruff and flows into the Elbe at Gauernitz after about 22 kilometers . The difference in height between the source and the mouth is a little more than 250 m.
Particularly in the flat terrain of its upper course, the Wilde Sau formed pronounced meanders due to the low flow speed , which in the local areas have been regulated to the point of river straightening.
Flood
During the flood disasters in 1958, 2002 and 2013, the otherwise peaceful brook devastated built and undeveloped land considerably, in 2002 there was one death in Wilsdruff.

In the immediate vicinity of the former train station in Wilsdruff is the Saubachtal Viaduct, newly built in 1954, of the former Freital-Potschappel-Nossen narrow-gauge railway . In Wilsdruff also the now established for the third time crossed Saubachtalbrücke the Federal Highway 4 , the relatively deep valley of the wild pig. This third bridge, which opened in 1996, had previous structures from 1954, 1974 and 1936.
