Wilfried Bauer (1999)

Wilfried Bauer (* 1963 in Rheydt ) is a German geologist and polar researcher who works as a professor at the German University of Technology in Oman .

Life

Bauer graduated from high school in Odenkirchen in 1982 and studied geology at RWTH Aachen University from 1984 to 1991 , interrupted by a one-year study stay at Forschungszentrum Jülich with Dietrich Welte and Detlev Leythaeuser , which resulted in a geochemical study on oil shales from southern Germany. In 1995 he received his doctorate at RWTH Aachen University with the dissertation Structural Development and Petrogenesis of the Basement Mountains of the northern Heimefrontfjella (western Dronning Maud Land / Antarctica) written by Gerhard Spaeth and then worked there as a postdoc with another Antarctic project. In 1997, he moved to Roland Walter's Geological Institute at RWTH Aachen University as a research assistant , where he completed his habilitation in 2004 and has since given lectures as a private lecturer. From 2005 to 2007 he worked as an employee of the International Division of the British Geological Survey in the mapping of 92 sheets of the geological map series 1: 100,000 of Madagascar . From 2007 to 2014 he explored gold, copper, graphite and bauxite deposits in Madagascar as an exploration geologist for an Australian company . Since 2015 he is lecturer at the German University of Technology in Oman where she teaches the subject Mineral Resources ( economic geology ).

research

Between 1994 and 2001, Bauer participated in a total of four Antarctic expeditions, including the GeoMaud expedition to central Queen Maud Land . His research deals with the plate tectonic development on the border between East and West Gondwana . Since 2004 he has been working on mainly structural geological issues in Mozambique and Madagascar.

His scientific work includes, in addition to the sheets of the geological map series of Madagascar published in 2008, nine geological maps of the Heimefrontfjella in Antarctica, as well as several sheets of the geological map series 1: 250,000 of Mozambique.

Bauer was co-editor of the journal Gondwana Research from 2003 to 2006 and he has been associate editor of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences since 2016 .

Private

Bauer is married and has two children. He collects and researches Madagascar's fiscal stamps .
