Wilfried Seibicke

Oskar Wilfried Seibicke (born January 5, 1931 in Bernsdorf , Upper Lusatia ; † September 11, 2009 ) was a German philologist , onomologist and was considered the "first name pope".

Life

Seibicke studied German, Nordic and general linguistics at the Universities of Leipzig and Bonn . In 1967 he received his doctorate from the latter . After receiving his doctorate, he worked at Heidelberg University from 1967 to 1994 , most recently as Academic Director .

His main research interests were area linguistics , historical linguistics, stylistics and name research. Through Name Research and the How Do We Call Our Child Advisor? he became known to a wide audience. His scientific activity was completed by the standard lexicon of the Historical German First Name Book.

For decades, Seibicke provided information on first names and commented on court decisions, mostly in the trade journal Das Standesamt . The Wilfried Seibicke Institute for Name Research, in cooperation with the Society for the German Language, provides information on the origin, meaning and permissibility of first names.
