Wilhelm Ahlwardt (born July 4, 1828 in Greifswald ; † November 2, 1909 there ) was a German orientalist and university professor .

Life

Ahlwardt was the son of the philologist Christian Wilhelm Ahlwardt . He studied oriental languages at the University of Greifswald and the Georg-August University of Göttingen and from 1854 to 1856 Arabic manuscripts at the Sorbonne in Paris . In 1857 he received his habilitation in Greifswald. From 1861 Ahlwardt worked as a professor for oriental languages at the University of Greifswald. He was also a librarian at the Greifswald University Library . In 1873/74 he was rector of the University of Greifswald. In 1888 he became a corresponding member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences . In 1899 he was elected a foreign corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

Honors

On the 40th anniversary of his professorship, the sculptor Wilhelm Wandschneider created a marble bust of Ahlwardt for the University of Greifswald in 1901. It is kept in the custody under the inventory number KU000158.
